How Often Should You Change Your Clear Aligners?

With more patients choosing clear aligner therapy than ever before, we frequently receive questions about the different aligner wear schedules. One of the most common is: "How often should I change my aligners?"

The answer depends on several factors, including the complexity of your case, your compliance with wear, your level of dental sensitivity, and how your teeth biologically respond to orthodontic movement.

7 Day Changes

A 7 day schedule is typically recommended for straightforward orthodontic cases and highly compliant patients who consistently wear their aligners for the recommended 22 hours per day.

The primary advantage of this protocol is efficiency, as treatment can often progress significantly faster than with traditional wear schedules. However, it offers less flexibility for social events, work meetings, frequent snacking, or other lifestyle factors that may reduce daily wear time. Consistency is critical — if aligners are not worn enough, teeth may fall behind, causing the trays to fit improperly.

Additionally, individual pain tolerance should be considered. Patients with more sensitive teeth may find weekly aligner changes less comfortable and may benefit from a slower wear schedule.

10-11 Day Changes

Most of our patients fall into the 10 to 11 day category. This is our most commonly prescribed aligner wear schedule because it provides an excellent balance between treatment efficiency and predictability.

This protocol is well-suited for average orthodontic cases as well as more challenging tooth movements, such as molar rotations. The additional time allows the teeth, periodontal ligaments, and surrounding bone to adapt more comfortably between aligner changes. It also provides some flexibility for patients whose daily wear occasionally falls short of the ideal 22-hour recommendation.

14 Day Changes

A 14 day schedule is often reserved for more complex orthodontic cases, significant bite corrections, severely misaligned teeth that may initially be difficult to fully seat into new aligners, patients with extensive restorative dental work, individuals with very sensitive teeth, or those who struggle to wear aligners consistently due to lifestyle demands.

The additional wear time allows the teeth and supporting tissues to stabilize before progressing to the next stage of treatment, often resulting in greater comfort and predictability. While this protocol extends overall treatment time, many patients appreciate the increased flexibility and gentler pace of tooth movement.

The Bottom Line

There is no universal aligner wear schedule. Factors such as treatment complexity, patient compliance, dental sensitivity, restorative considerations, and individual biological response all play an important role in determining the ideal protocol for each patient.

Whether your orthodontist recommends changing aligners every 7, 10, or 14 days, the goal remains the same: safe, efficient, and predictable tooth movement. Following your prescribed wear schedule is one of the most important factors in achieving the best possible orthodontic outcome.
